The Magpies scored 21 goals in December in all competitions, only the sixth time they’ve scored more than 20 goals in a calendar month, with two of them coming under Howe (also 22 in April 2023).

But speaking after the win, Howe played down the magnitude of his side's latest win, with his eyes firmly fixed on continuing their year-end form into 2025. 

"I don't know about the win being a statement, but for us, we knew that we have to try to keep building on the momentum that we had built in recent weeks," Howe said.

"We have had a really good look about us, a strong, confident team, and I am happy we were able to continue that at a ground that hasn't been kind to Newcastle over the years.

"It is a big win psychologically. We are moving in the right direction defensively.
